Sri Kusyuniati, Ph.D.
Ms. Kusyuniati is a freelance consultant, and lecturer in Gender Studies Post Graduate Program in the University of Indonesia. She was Deputy Secretary for Programs in the National AIDS Commission, with additional responsibility for encouraging the formation and empowerment of district AIDS Commissions throughout Indonesia. Prior to this, she was a senior Aid Management Specialist in USAID Indonesia with responsibility for Reproductive/Child Health within the health team and Behavior Change and Advocacy in the larger basic human services team (covering education, food security, environment and health). She comes from a strong NGO background – the founder of Yayasan Annisa Swasti (YASANTI), a women’s NGO in Yogyakarta that assists workers to organize for economic and political empowerment – and was also the founder in the mid- 1990s of Rifka Annisa Women’s Crisis Center, the first such center in Indonesia still serving as the part-time Chair. She was also one of the founders of INSIST, an NGO working for democracy, good governance and justice. She has extensive experience in gender and community development activities, both as a consultant and as a teacher/trainer. Ms Kusyuniati’s design of the Desa SiAGa approach to village preparedness and Birth Preparedness and Complication Readiness or P4K (Program Persiapan Persalinan dan Perencanaan Komplikasi) has now been adopted by Indonesia’s Ministry of Health for nationwide implementation for Safe motherhood program. She is currently an Academic Board Member of the post-graduate program in Gender Studies at the University of Indonesia.

1980 – 1993: Yayasan Annisa Swasti (Yasanti). Executive Director of a women’s NGO, running various projects such as community development, research and advocacy funded by several donor agencies: the Ford Foundation, NOVIB, the Asia Foundation, OXFAM, the German Embassy, Bread for the World. Specifically this NGO trained women workers for leadership, entrepreneurship, workers rights, income generation, and community-based organization.
1978 – 1980: International Planned Parenthood Federation. Field Officer, organizing poor village women for family planning awareness through and income generation approach.

Additional Experience – Teaching and Training Ms Kusyuniati has designed training curricula, formulated training hand-outs and acted as a training facilitator in programs on gender awareness, occupational health, leadership, cooperative formation, entrepreneurship, dispute resolution and workers’ rights. Additional Experience – Research - 2002-2003: for the MNH Program, conducted a survey of behavior change as part of BCI activities in West Java, including formative research, mid-line and end-line surveys.
- 2000: May – September: for AusAID, formulated the research design for a study of employment terms and conditions in selected ministries in Jakarta. She was subsequently responsible for implementing the survey and analyzing/reporting on the results.
- 2000: January – September: for the ILO, conduct a baseline survey in six provinces to prepare policy recommendation for an ILO employment creation project.
- 1999: for the ILO, documented donor-funded employment creation projects as part of a study of employment opportunities for women in several ministries.
- 1997-1998: for the Ford Foundation, conducted research into the Indonesian labour market, including the history and effects of labour strikes in 1990-1996, with particular attention to the life history of female industrial workers in Central Java (Yasanti’s target groups). The research findings are published in a book Lika-liku Kehidupan Buruh Perempuan, 1995, Pustaka Pelajar: Yogyakarta.
- 1991: Conducted research on the life experiences of Moslem women in Central Java. A paper Moslem Women Speak for Themselves was presented at a workshop on Gender Perspective in Various Community Groups, University of Washington in Seattle.
- 1991: for the Ministry of Manpower, was a Researcher into the life of prostitutes in Jakarta, Yogyakarta and Surabaya. The results were published as a Research Report on Prostitution and became the basis for policy by the Ministry.
- 1989: for NOVIB, designed and conducted a qualitative study of women porters (market coolies) in Yogyakarta. The results were published in a research report.
- 1987: for the Indonesian Research Academy (LIPI), involved in the Young Researcher Project on the work ethic among the Indonesian civil servants in Central Java.
- 1982: for the Ford Foundation, was researcher in a project organized by LSP on the situation of women industrial workers in Indonesia. The results was presented in a seminar and published in a report entitled The Situation and Condition of the Indonesian Women Workers, published by LSP.
